Association boards

Last updated on 11 August 2026
Are you a board member of a study or student association or do you want to set up your own association? This page helps association boards further along their way.

Recognized student organizations

Student Support Fund

Every university has a student support fund to support students who experience study delays due to special circumstances. This also includes board activities. Under certain conditions, students may receive a board grant. One of the conditions is that the association is recognized by VU Amsterdam. You can submit a request to the Student Support Fund to have your association recognized.

New and small associations

As there are already many associations in Amsterdam, we ask you to join an existing association. However, if you have an idea for a new association that is different from existing ones, you are free to establish your own association. You can start by writing an implementation plan and choosing a board. You can then organize activities and recruit new members.

Student associations that do not meet the requirements of the Student Support Fund to become a recognized student organization can receive support from VU by finding suitable spaces and information about (setting up) an association. For this, you can email studentengagement@vu.nl

Student initiatives

Does your association have a good idea with which you want to contribute to the well-being of VU students? Or does your association want to organize an activity to promote diversity or community building at VU Amsterdam? Submit your application for a student initiative to see whether you can receive financial support to make your initiative happen! There is no deadline for submitting applications for student initiatives. If you have any questions about this, please also contact studentengagement@vu.nl
